Bring the Primos Tank Car Back to Life

Help restore a one-of-a-kind survivor from Colorado’s mining era

Help Us Fill Out Our Collection — The Primos Tank Car

The final piece of our Outdoor Railroad Museum Shed in Silverton is within reach — and right now, every gift you give goes further than ever.

Your Gift Doubles the Impact

An anonymous donor has pledged $50,000 toward the Primos Tank Car — once we raise the first $60,000. We’re asking our members and the wider narrow gauge community to help us reach that goal. Every contribution brings us closer to unlocking the full pledge and completing this remarkable restoration.

Some more donations have come in and we are at 15% already as of August 19, 2026. Help us get filled faster, and get this train rolling!

A One-of-a-Kind Piece of History

When finished, the Primos Tank Car will be truly unique — the only wood-frame tank car with an 1870s-style tank in existence. Dating from before World War I, it once hauled oil to fire the roasters at the Primos vanadium mill, part of the story that shaped southwest Colorado’s mining and railroad history. It will be the twelfth and final railcar in our collection at the Outdoor Railroad Museum in Silverton.
